What’s up you guys, It’s J. Cardenas!

I am an Artist, born and raised in Miami, Florida. I received a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts and a Minor in Art History from FIU. I’ve had a passion for Art for as long as I can remember.

In the second grade, my teacher told my mother that I had advanced art skills for my age and that I should audition for a Magnet Art Program at a new Art School in the neighborhood. She helped me build a portfolio and I got in. I attended Magnet Art Schools as early as Elementary School and continued it all the way through High School.

Unfortunately I, like the majority of the artists I know, struggled with hearing that being an artist won’t put money on the table and that I should pick a real career. This negativity discouraged me from applying to any Art and Design Colleges, thinking I was not good enough to make it as an Artist.

I stayed local and applied for the Accelerated Masters Architecture Program at FIU. I was accepted, later finding out that I was the only traditional artist in a group of Engineers. Anyway, that crazy choice lasted a year before I realized I was miserable. So, I dropped out of the program and switched over to their Fine Arts Program.

The freedom to express myself and create artwork is what made me happy. Not empty boxes or straight lines scaled to a fraction of whatever the height of the building shaped like an acorn was… It was the brushstrokes, the pencil marks, the thickness of the drawing paper, the smell of the mediums and the bright paint colors that made my day.

The only thing I learned while being in the Architecture program was that I do not like math.

After college, I landed a job at Blick Art Materials. I worked there for a little over two years. During this time, I learned more about different materials and styles, met amazing artists and learned a little about the business side of the Art world. Thanks to this, I sold a few of my pieces and was even commissioned for a couple. I continued looking at my options for an Art related Career, sparking an interest in becoming an Art Teacher. While still working at the Art Store, I was recommended a private art studio where they dedicated themselves to teaching and helping kids build their art portfolio so that they can audition for the Magnet Art Programs. I worked there for about a year and decided it was time to move on. I continued working at the Art Store until my next move.

The pandemic hit a few months after. I lost my job at the Art Store. Throughout the lockdown, I kept producing work, even selling a couple. I took on the challenge of learning how to produce digital art while the research for an Art related career path continued. I stumbled upon an Art community on YouTube. For the longest time, I thought that the platform was nothing but music videos and kids trying to be funny. When the lockdown was lifted, I was given back my job at the Art store. I stayed there for a few more months but realized that if I wanted to make it as an Full-Time Artist, I needed a temporary job where I can save up as much as possible and take advantage of a set schedule. This gave me the chance to produce artwork on the side without a hectic schedule. By the end of 2020, I was working 9-6 at an insurance office and producing artwork late into the night.

After many years of learning, experimenting and practicing, I could not keep myself from wanting to create it all. I’ve been asked if I am a landscape artist or an abstract artist but I can’t put a specific label on myself. I end up saying I do a little of everything because it is all interesting and challenging in their own way… So, in 2021, with a little encouragement from my family, I created my very own YouTube channel. This gave me the freedom to create anything and everything I wanted while I teach/give advice on what I am working on. From painting, drawing, wood cutouts, working with crayons, markers, pens, video and audio editing, digital art software, to learning how to work with a camera, the creative possibilities became endless for me…
